Peppers only friend was his father and when his father was called to war Pepper felt abandoned. With nobody else to turn to he and his older brother London acted out and got into some trouble. London was arrested and Pepper had to speak to Father Oliver about his wrong doings. Father Oliver was his spiritual advisor. Pepper was told by Father Oliver that he had to make an amends to Hashimoto. After making his amends Hashimoto and Pepper bonded and Hashimoto became his friend/mentor. Hashimoto would spend time mentoring Pepper. At times Pepper wanted to give up on his faith and his higher power, but Hashimoto kept encouraging Pepper to not lose faith and to keep pressing on. With no one positive to guide them through life there’s no telling where that child may wind up. Many young boys end up turning to the streets to find something or someone to fill that void, and I was one of them. I was very fortunate to have a strong, loving, and caring mother who never gave up on me, but unlike a lot of my friends they weren’t as fortunate. Many of them are six feet under and if lucky my other friends became temporary or permanent residents at the Big House. What I enjoyed most about this movie wasn’t the fact that Pepper had two positive mentors in his life, but it was his belief in a power greater than himself. A faith and a belief that nobody can take from you. A faith that grows stronger and stronger like a muscle as you work it. Jeremiah 17-5 states "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the LORD.” I am a firm believer and a man of faith. I believe that every child should have a strong, positive, male role model in their life preferably a father. However, in life we’re to do the best we can with the hand we are dealt. No man is perfect and we all fall short, therefore believing and developing a relationship with a Higher Power in my opinion is very important because from my experience I either believe in something or fall for
