According to a news report from CNN by Paul A. Reyes, the Obama administration has sent out a message to illegal Central American women and children in the U.S. that soon there will be plans to start a 30-day "surge" of immigration raids. These raids are targeted to families with criminal records or law violations. According to this news report, Paul Reyes from CNN argues that the raids the Obama Administration plans on carrying out would actually do more harm to these people than the good it would do to let them stay. These raids are a result of the doubling of the number of Central American families that have been apprehended at the southern border. The majority of the people seeking asylum are women and children from three of the current countries ranked with the most gang conscription, sexual violence and homicides, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. This is connected to the readings we have discussed in class such as the “Burn Layers, Section 1: Forced Migration: Stories of Violence and Resilience”. We can see from Reyes report and from the films/testimonies shown in CNN that these people are in desperate need to get away from the gang violence that threatens them back home. We can also see how the children flee from their home country as gangs try and recruit them and make them commit crimes for a living.
