Is Oscar Depressed? I believe Oscar is having a mental crisis rather than being the victim of a supernatural curse. Clinical Depression is a persistent feeling of sadness. Oscar expresses many reasons to believe that he is depressed. Depression can cause physical and mental changes. Symptoms of depression include changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, daily behavior, fatigue, feeling hopelessness, pessimism, weight loss or gain, careless about appearance, feeling of guilt, and suicidal thoughts. Oscar didn’t have many friends or girlfriends, barely any. A lot of people made fun of his appearance. On page 23, Oscar’s sister tells him “you're going to die a virgin.” It wasn’t just his classmates at school that bullied him, his own blood family bullied him. Oscar had an absent father figure in his life, on page 15 it states “it wasn’t just that he didn’t have a father to show him the masculine ropes, he simply lacked all aggressive martial tendencies.” Oscar did not have a male model in his life.
