Many children struggle in school, only to find their learning problems are actually the result of eye problems. Even very young children need to see an eye doctor, as they don't know the difference between normal vision and what they are seeing. This can interfere with normal development, as they aren't seeing the world clearly.
Adults need to see an optometrist every year also. The eye exam not only ensures prescriptions remain current, but that problems are detected early. This allows treatment to begin, and this may help to slow or stop the progression of diseases and disorders of the eye. In addition, the optometrist may find other problems with a person's health, ones that have yet to be identified in other ways.
When a person suffers a trauma to the eye, however, it's best to contact an ophthalmologist. They have special training to deal with issues such as this. Furthermore, when surgery is needed, an ophthalmologist will need to be seen. Thankfully, most people find the optometrist is all they need for routine eye care.
