Okonkwo's Emotions In Things Fall Apart

Based on the novel so far “Things Fall Apart”, by Chinua Achebe, the story mostly takes place in an African village In Nigeria known as the Ibo village, were the spiritual world is strongly believed to exists in its culture. The story revolves around a man named Okonkwo, a clan leader, who is widely known for his successful and powerful nature. He tries to avoid being like his father which was being unsuccessful and weak, and because of this he tries to convince himself and the society that he is the opposite of what his father once was. There are many cruel things that Okonkwo does, such as being extremely violent and showing no care of how others feel. This scene is interesting because these feelings show that he has positive human emotions, despite his lack of affection, and toughness that makes up his personality. Also he tells his son Nwoye to sit with him in his obi which points out his affection for someone. Another scene that shows the positive emotions of Okonkwo is when he most certainly show feelings for his daughter Ezinma. Okonkwo’s positive human emotions can be clearly seen when he tells himself, “When did you become a shivering old women,”. After Okonkwo kills Ikemefuna he began to feel miserable and guilty. The death of Ikemefuna bothers him a lot to the point that it changes the way he acts. He was unable to eat and he couldn’t sleep. Also his mind keep shifting towards
Ikemefuna and it only made him feel worst when it says in the scene, “His mind went back to
Ikemefuna and he shivered”. The only thing that would prevent him from always thinking about the death of Ikemefuna was to find some work. He was like a son Okonkwo never had and this brings out Okonkwo’s positive human emotions. The love and affection is strong and this shows how Okonkwo feels even if he thinks expressing feelings is unmanly and
