Odysseus is described as a strong hero and warrior but after his return to Ithaca, but these words are just describing his physical capabilities and do not take into account his mental health. After a veteran (a modern day hero) returns home from war it is very common for them to experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder also known PTSD. Post-Traumatic Stress is commonly seen in someone who has just experienced a traumatic event (ADAA). The common symptoms of PTSD are feelings of agitation, irritability, loss of interest, guilt, and sleep insomnia. It is very common for someone experiencing PTSD to avoid places that would bring back memories of the traumatic event or experience. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms can take up to 3 months to show up. After extensive research I have found that over 44.7 million people in the world have or are struggling with PTSD. The New York Times article called Research Traces Between Combat Blast and PTSD stated that Post-Traumatic Stress is closely related to damage of the bran and brain tissue from blasts or extreme impact. Odysseus starts to experience PTSD symptoms after he experiences the trauma of war, loss of freedom, and fear. When the Odyssey ends Odysseus is safe in his home but the traumatic events that have occurred will forever affect him. The Trojan War, his imprisonment on the island with Calypso, and constant state of fear will affect him forever. When a veteran returns home from war they are looked upon as a hero and a survivor which is very similar to what Odysseus is going through. After reading the Odyssey we can conclude that being a hero and living the life of a hero comes with problems that are extremely complicated and go deeper than what is on the
