It was really hard for me to analyze the film in the way we were supposed to, and that is because I have been a fan of Tom Clancy and Jack Ryan for a long time. I started with the video games, which led me to the movies and then some of the books. Being that involved you see it less as intuition and more of skill as Jack Ryan eventually becomes a successful president. However, my understanding has always been that Jack Ryan is essentially the Sherlock Holmes of the CIA, but Sherlock doesn’t use intuition that is Watson that deduces things, Sherlock is the one that uses induction the facts lead him to his conclusion. Because when Ryan first greets Tyler at the dock, Tyler is retrofitting a rescue sub to be able to dock with almost any other kind of submarine. This knowledge would carry over when they stage a torpedo to “destroy” the October and let Ryan and Mancuso on board. Further leading into that scene Ryan knew how Remius was planning to evacuate the crew, via a fake radiation leak. Ryan's time as an analyst definitely gave him an advantage of being able to having knowledge of what might be able to be a reason to evacuate the crew on a submarine. So while Jack Ryan may be no Sherlock Holmes, he definitely saved the world from World War III based on his “gut.” Most of what led Ryan to save the day was the one time he met Remius in Moscow, as well as an off-hand scene earlier in the film that gave Ryan the knowledge of how the propulsion system worked, as well as a way to access the submarine underwater. While it is easy to see that this was just cleaver foreshadowing by a story teller, it is very reminiscent of real-world experiences of individual's subconscious retrieving fragments of knowledge and experience and fuses that on to new
