Next, it was time for the NCLEX. This is an examination that must be passed in order to begin practicing as a nurse. This test was like no other test I had ever taken. I studied, and studied, and then studied some more. Test day came and still I felt so unprepared. I wanted to quit, I was scared of failing but I pressed on and to my surprise I passed, the first time! I was completely elated, and again I thought, “I did it, it is REALLY over now!” Again, I was wrong. Next, it was time to look for a job. I thought this part would be a piece of cake. I had heard for years about the nursing shortage. I had never had a problem getting a job in the past. But this time was much different I put in application after application and after 3 months of diligently searching with no bites at all I felt completely frustrated and just wanted to throw my hands up in the air and say, “forget it!” But I didn’t, I kept on searching and finally landed my first nursing job.
