For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the medical field. I do not mean to say I enjoy overdramatized, soap operas about doctors and their complicated affairs, I mean medical documentaries, surgery videos, and the ever-so-popular YouTube clip of someone snapping their Achilles tendon at a basketball game or draining a large cyst. I have always been intrigued by science and medicine, but I never really thought anything of it. The medical field seemed interesting, sure, but other than that, it just never seemed like the career for me. I had always been shy and was turned off by the idea of interacting with patients; but now, that is exactly what draws me to the nursing profession. My feelings changed my senior year of high school, when I applied at a local nursing home, and was hired as a dietary aide in the Alzheimer’s and Dementia unit. Through my job, I discovered a hidden desire to help others, through the shortcomings I witnessed there and my interactions with residents.

I have always had a huge amount of interest in the medical field, and science has always been one of my strong skills, but I think the thing I offer most to the profession is the passion for helping those who need it. This was not even a skill I believed I had, until I found a place it was needed. Seeing the other employees lack of empathy really helped push me towards this program.
