Nurse managers (NMs) today, must exhibit leadership behaviors or styles that are suitable for the continuously shifting and multifaceted healthcare delivery system (Casida & Pinto-Zipp, 2008, p. 7). The purpose of this paper is to critically appraise the article “Staff nurse perceptions of nurse manager leadership styles and outcomes” (Casida & Parker, 2011). This paper will define how leadership styles of nurse managers (NMs) is correlated to outcomes in hospital nursing units. Three leadership styles are mentioned, however main discussion will be centered around transformational and transactional leadership. Casida and Parker (2011) seek “to explore the correlations of leadership styles of nurse managers and outcomes” utilizing the full-range theory (p. 478). The design of the study was a descriptive exploratory correlational which sought to define relationships among variables rather than to conclude cause-and effect associations, which was appropriate for the research (Polit & Beck, 2008, p. …show more content…
The sample and data collection process utilized in this study was very complex and convoluted. Researchers utilized secondary data from a previous, 2007 dissertation study, placing potential limitations on the validity and generalizability of results (Casida & Parker, 2011, p. 484). The sample size was small consisting of 278 staff nurse’s (SNs) and 37 NMs and computed using a statistical program for analyzes. According to Polit and Beck (2008) power analysis is not utilized often in nursing research because reports often offer no explanation for the size of the sample, undermining statistical conclusion validity. Furthermore, samples that are too small may not support the study’s suggestions (p. 350). A multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) was used to measure both the independent and dependent variables, which is the most widely used tool in leadership research. The independent variables identified by Casida and Parker (2011) was of TFL and TRL leadership and LEE, LS, and LE were the dependent variables (p. 480).
