In the article “Implementing bedside shift report” by Coleen Ferris, she describes how her hospital successfully enforced the Transforming Care at the Bedside initiative even though her nursing team originally resisted the change. She describes the process as a slow one and in the beginning even she was not convinced bedside reporting was a feasible change for the hospital. After doing thorough research on the subject, she came to the same conclusion many hospitals are coming to today; bedside reporting during shift change will improve communication with patients, families, and nurses while also helping to ensuring patient safety.

Appointing a specific team the task would be very helpful. There are three major components the team will need to accomplish. The first would be to define what the nurse bedside shift report is and what it will look like. The second, to create a bedside shift report checklist for the nurses to follow to set a standard for each bedside report on different units of the hospital. Providing copies of the checklist to each nurse and posting it on computers and at the nurse’s station could be very helpful. Also adapting a brochure for the patient and family to inform them what a bedside shift report is and how they can be involved in it. Lastly, plan the bedside shift report training for the nurses. To be most effective in training it is important to use 3 or more different learning strategies such as giving information, modeling behavior, providing feedback, and practicing skills.
