There was plenty of room for all of our things without making it intrusive, but she still left after a short period of time. I think this norm is there because people are used to having their own “area” when out in public places. It is frowned upon to enter other people’s areas even though it is all technically public property and we have the right to sit where we want to. This did show that people do appreciate their space when out in public places. Growing up we were taught to respect people and their personal space and that making people feel uncomfortable is not okay. That is something that follows us from childhood into adulthood, simply because it is something that we have had drilled in our heads over and over again from an extremely young age. While I do believe that some people want to have more personal space than others, I think that we tend to overestimate how much personal space we truly get. Overall I thought this was a good norm breaking activity to show that people are more comfortable by themselves rather than with someone who could potentially become a friend just from sitting at a random table together.
