Twins in the United States are starting to multiply. The percentage of twin births have rose 76 percent in the last 30 years. Thanks to technological advances in fertility drugs and the fact that more women are having children after the age of 35 increases your odds of having twins. It is said that now one in 30 babies born in the U.S. is a twin. Although the number the of twins have escalated, it was reported that births of triplets or higher degree of multiple births has decreased over the past 18 years. Most people are only aware of the two most common types of twins, fraternal and identical, but little do they know there are about 10 different types of twins.
Fraternal twins are the most common type of twins and account for up to two-thirds of all twin births. Fraternal twins, often called “non-identical twins,” usually occurs when two eggs are fertilized at the same time by two different sperm. The two eggs form two zygotes, which explains why fraternal twins are referred to as dizygotic. They are no more alike than any other sibling. There is a genetic form for fraternal twinning, meaning that non-identical twins run in the family.
