Essay On Non Dualism

“When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly. When people see some things as good, other things become bad”(Lao Tzu, 2). Non-dualism doesn’t really make much sense at first. How can two opposites be interrelated? The word opposite in itself means that the two things are most definitely not related. Beautiful and ugly may not have the same meaning at all, but they can have an effect on each other, and it is the same for good and bad. I compared the relationship between beautiful and ugly to having a favorite outfit. Once you find a favorite outfit that you know you look good in, you all of a sudden want to wear it all the time. Its almost like that is the only outfit you notice, and all of the other outfits start to seem kind of dull. Once you find an outfit that is beautiful, all of the other outfits seem ugly. Good and bad can be compared similarly. Say you go to a restaurant, and you get a cheeseburger every time. You get it every time because it is your favorite of course. What Lao Tzu is saying here is that two opposites need each other in order to exist. If we didn’t have low, how could we tell what is high? If nothing was classified as difficult, how could we know what is easy? If there wasn’t a before, we wouldn’t have an after, so would we even have time? Opposites depend on each other completely. We look at one to define the other, and that is how we live our lives. Without a before and after, we would be living in the same moment forever. Instead, we are able to keep moving on because different events in our lives happen one after
