Conformity vs. Non-conformity

What does it feel like when you go to school or to go out? Does it feel like you need to change how you look, act, or feel? I am sure that we have all had that time where we needed to be who we are not. Some people would say that you need to be a conformist to fit in, and some would say that you need to be a nonconformist to fit in. I believe that in today's world it is not a good idea to change feelings, looks, beliefs, or actions to fit in with a group because you can just be who you are.
It is not a good idea to change feelings, looks, beliefs, or actions to fit in with a group because some people to choose to fit in and some do not. In the article “The Sociology of Leopard Man” Feys tells us that “seceding from society, as Leopard Man has done, would certainly free us from social pressures.” (Feys 1). This states that people should have there own choice on fitting in. People would always accept who you are, you will always fit in without changing anything. It is important that people should always accept who you are, and the choices you make.

In “The Pedestrian” leonard and the police car said “What are you doing out?' 'Walking,' said Leonard Mead. 'Walking!' 'Just walking,' he said simply, but his face felt cold. 'Walking, just walking, walking?'”. This shows that even when doing something as simple as walking, Leonard gets questioned for doing something out of the ordinary. Another example is when in the article “The Sociology of Leopard Man” the author says “He lives in solitude.. spends most of his days in a small cabin in the Scottish wilderness. He ventures into civilization only when he needs food and supplies”. This shows that Tom Leppard feels uneasy and uncomfortable even when having contact with human society. One doesn't have to feel the need to always do what everyone else is

Is nonconformity another way of conforming? Nonconformity, by definition, is the "failure or refusal to conform, as with established customs, attitudes, or ideas". Losing Individuality There is a Japanese proverb, “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down,” meaning it is hard to be different without meeting resistance (Hashi, “Conformity in Japan”). Society has always wanted to make people “normal.” From the first moment I stepped into Athens Academy, I sought to both stand out and fit in, but these are contradictions and cannot really exist together. At first I thought I was succeeding at this game, but as time progressed, I realized that I was just slowly assimilating to what I thought people wanted me to be because I thought I would be admired by my peers if I just went with the flow. I was not wrong.…

Introduction In today’s world our lives are dictated by the opinions of others, and these others are mostly strangers that we call “friends” from social media accounts. Nonconformity has become harder and harder because we’ve become trained in some ways to believe in the opinions of those screen “friends” and not the ones who really matter. But when you truly don’t conform you become that one weird person who’s living as they really are, not trying to win the opinion of others. Most of these conformist struggles have come around because of the technology that we have, and when we take a break from it we finally get to see what we’re really like and who our true friends are.…

If everyone was the same, earth would be transformed into a living disaster, no new ideas, new inventions, nor new discoveries. I also have lived conformity, I was always the girl who was different, I cared what others said about me, until I was told “live life to the fullest- be creative and express yourself in everything you do, because life is too short to be a follower.” Even to this day, people exclude me from activities or don’t include in because I am different. In rare occasions I become an outsider, when it’s a material that I do not understand as much. When that person or group does not include me in it makes me feel like I’m missing out on the fun or maybe they just don’t like me, and this left me with an unpleasant feeling.…

Conformity has become a habit that people in this age easily fall into throughout the years without even knowing it. Just like everyone else I have have also fallen into the conformity a couple times in my teenage years. Many of those experiences I didn't feel like myself and I knew I wasn't, but I still persisted in trying to be like that one popular girl, or the girl that everyone liked. I knew I could never be like those people because I was someone completely different and I realized that in falling into that conformity I blocked out my own self. By trying to act like someone I wasn't I…

If an individual does not resist the temptation to conform, they will lose their individuality that makes them different. Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Pedestrian” provides a memorable picture of what a world without any non-conformists might look like. The city the author describes, “The car moved down the empty river- bed streets and off away, leaving the empty streets with the empty pavements, and no sound and no motion all the rest of the chill November night” (Bradbury 5). This passage portrays the city as empty, no soul, lifeless. This supports the idea that when all individuals conform to the same social expectations, the world loses the uniqueness of each person which makes the world seem dark and empty.…

Changing your feelings, looks, beliefs, and actions to fit in a group is not a great idea but neither is it a bad idea. I say this because your beliefs kind of make you who you are and you get to discover the people you like being around with, but sometimes you don’t have to just find the people you have in common with. Changing yourself for the better is good and in order to really convince yourself to change is to try hanging out with other people and observing how they act and look. Being a conformist could help you get along with most people and you can get tips about things or help from pretty much anybody. There isn’t really any danger to being a nonconformist but you can’t be promised to not have society judgements.…
