Introduction
When this course first started, I read the competencies and objectives and thought they were vague outlines that didn’t really give me any idea about what the class would entail. Now looking back on the course and what my cohort has learned throughout our first level of nursing school, it is easy to focus in on the competencies and objectives as well as come up with examples of how we have been practicing them. Some of the most prominent ones were the NMNEC competency of ethics in healthcare and recognizing the need of healthcare throughout many diverse populations as well as the course objectives of identifying patient safety risks.
Exemplars of Competence
We have identified and practiced the NMNEC competency of describing ethics in relation to healthcare. My education this semester has taught me that ethics is one of the most important aspect of nursing, because it is considered one of the most trusted careers. Ethics is applicable in almost any situation whether it is comforting a patient, providing full disclosure on their condition, or providing care that is conscious of the pain and the emotions of the patient. It is important to realize that these factors are important and ever developing. I feel as if my classes are immersing me not only in the material of nursing but the healthcare culture, and identifying these competencies and objectives makes it easier to see the progress I have made throughout the semester.
