Essay On New Salem Witch Hysteria

Are witches really real? Did they even exist? Well in the February of 1692 a group of young girls had a sleepover decided to play a fortune telling game and fell very ill afterwards. They started acting strangely with violet outburst of tantrums. The doctor found nothing wrong with them. The doctor later diagnosed them with bewitchment. This Started the hysteria in New Salem, Massachusetts. Once the hysteria spread through the towns people thought the devil was trying to destroy Christians and the all the communities involved. Many of the town members started accusing each other of witchcraft so they wouldn't get on trail and or killed. The first three witches accused where Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba. These three girls claimed to be working for the devil. They where then arrested and examined just to find out that Tituba said she was approached by the devil personally. These are only few of the hundred people committed to witchcraft in this area. For example a nine year old girl Elizabeth Paris was having uncontrollable screaming fits but they doctors found nothing wrong with her. The girl was later then diagnosed with bewitchment. Saying that their was no real evidence that these people being accused were actually witches. So they release those left in jail, apologized, and hysteria just stopped just like that. People forgot about it but not the memories it left behind. Many families still honor their descendants who where accused. Still to this day we don't know if their was actually witches. Was it there to spice up their lives and get attention? Or was it all a big misunderstanding because those accused had nothing physically wrong with them? You can decide it all
