The Harmful Effects Of Pornography Research

Improved Essays
Within the past month, the topic of pornography has come into the public eye with the state of Utah declaring it a public health crisis. For some this came as a shock and offense but to me it was only a matter of time. I have experienced first hand the effects of how pornography use before and sporadically during a relationship negatively affects the relationship. From this I can tell you that when I knew my significant other had viewed porn it hurt me, my self-esteem, my sense of security, and I even led me to question my worth. One such stimulus is a neurotransmitter and one neurotransmitter that many people are familiar with is dopamine. Dopamine is the chemical in the brain that aids the feeling of pleasure. In a typical healthy person, dopamine is released in many ways like a reward to your brain in response to things like roller-coasters, junk food, and exercise. However, this rush that people feel can become addicting. This is similar to what occurs when someone views pornography, there is an outside stimulus— nowadays typically a video or photography on a screen— a reaction to this stimulus, and a release of dopamine common with sexual activity. In Ross Douthat’s Article “Is Pornography Adultery,” he discusses different cases in which pornography has been seen as “cheating” in different relationships. Now when you look up adultery the definition that comes up is, “voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not his or her spouse.” Although by definition pornography (also known as porn) is not adultery it’s understandable why it has been seen as a problem. Douthat’s argument in this article is that, “If it’s cheating on your wife to watch while another woman performs sexually in front of you, then why isn’t it cheating to watch while the same sort of spectacle unfolds on your laptop or TV?”…

In “Perils of Pornophobia” Nadine Strossen argues that pro censorship of all pornography is not the answer. Strossen describes a number of situations, where artistic paintings and photographs of woman’s nude bodies were removed from public viewing because of censorship. She states that pro-censorship feminists design their arguments on the premise that getting rid of pornography from society would reduce sexism and violence against women. She argues that Pornophobia would simply collide feminists in their battle for women’s liberation and rights. Strossen implies that many pornophobic feminists conclude that sex is degrading to women and that even consensual or nonviolent sex is evil and so women must be confined.…

APPENDIX C: STAKEHOLDER ANALYSIS WRITERS AND EDITORS Those who produce BuzzFeed’s content would be most severely affected by a position on the sexual objectification of men/women. Since it is easier to access, it also accounts for a lot of female objectification leading to the acceptance of sexual violence in our society. Sexual material, in this case porn, contributes to sexual violence today. “Exposure to pornography helps to sustain young people’s adherence to sexist and unhealthy notions of sex and relationships. And, especially among boys and young men who are frequent consumers of pornography, including of more violent materials, consumption intensifies attitudes supportive of sexual coercion and increases their likelihood of perpetrating assault. While children and young people are sexual beings and deserve age-appropriate materials on sex and sexuality, pornography is a poor, and indeed dangerous, sex educator” (The harms of pornography exposure among children and young people).…

Our society’s perception of sex and sexuality is influenced by various factors, such as the media, culture, and religion. The media influences our perception of sex by oversexualizing women and over masculinizing men in advertisements, music videos, television, and film. Female models and actresses may dress or act in a provocative manner to gain attention by the media and particularly from men. Women may be influenced to imitate these behaviors, or even exaggerate their sexuality, to appear desirable to men. Women may also feel unconfident when comparing their bodies to those seen in the media, creating an unhealthy perception of their sexuality.…
