Essay On My Literacy

Literacy has plenty of different types interpretations. Like most individuals, when I think of literacy I think of reading but most importantly understanding what you are reading. When babies are brought into this world, they are like sponges waiting to soak up new information about their unfamiliar surroundings. Deborah Brandt states “Sponsors, as I have come to think of them, are any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract , who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withheld literacy—-and gain advantage by it in some way.” Older individuals use their knowledge as literacy sponsors to pass down what they have learned to the next generation. One who always comes to mind is my mother. Therefore, her guidance through my life has given me a view of different aspects of my culture, religion and even the independence of improving my own literacy.
I was born in Jamaica but came to New York when I was eighteen months. Living with a Jamaican family and understanding the culture can be very difficult for me. The language is somewhat similar to English but the slang and accents can throw some people off. As most parents who bring their children to America, mine wanted me to get the best education possible. My mother, still to this day, never wants me to

My mother’s use of literacy techniques had its negative effects on my culture. On the other hand, the positive effects override them. My mother being my literacy sponsor brought us closer together as I grew up and still has not been broken. I may have lost my path of literacy for books when social media started to become a part of my daily routine. However, in the end, I found an interest of mine and took advantage of social media to improve my literacy. My mother has been my literary sponsor throughout my life. I remember the times my mom would make me read books and later on have me write and summarize the book. She would also make me notecards of tough vocabulary words and have me memorize and spell each word. She helped me learn many aspects of literacy such as vocabulary, spelling, grammar and much more. As Erika J. Petersen explains in her article, Past Experiences and Future Attitudes in Literacy, “… It 's apparent that past experiences with learning literacy appeared to play a role in these people’s future attitudes toward reading and writing and that praise continues to change your attitudes throughout your entire learning experience” (Petersen 197).…

The first essay that I wrote for EN100 was the Literacy Narrative Essay. Although this assignment seemed dreadful, this essay made me realize how much was expected of me, and how far my writing was from those expectations. Throughout the course of the semester, my writing vastly improved, getting closer and closer to meeting expectations. The Discourse Community Essay was so close to those expectations, and the Informative Essay was right where I wanted it to be.…

This year I have the honor of spending my days with 24 five year just starting their literacy journey. The undertaking is a daunting task (thankfully I have an amazing classroom teacher leading the way), the standards in place for kindergarten students are high. Finding a balance between strategies that distill a text into identifying letters and producing letter sounds, and allowing the students to find delight in a book of their own choice is imperative. I am humbled daily by their fortitude and willingness to participate in the tasks necessary to become lifelong readers and writers. The pendulum swings between excitement and frustration during our ELA lessons, which leads me to reflect on my own literacy experiences, and wonder and hope that I can give them what they need.…

Knoblauch’s article talks about four different types of literacy that are seen throughout history: functional, cultural, personal-growth and critical. Although these are the literacies Knoblauch discusses, he lets the reader know that there are a variety of definitions that not mentioned in his article. The message Knoblauch tries to send the audience is to know that people with power as in educators or professionals are the ones worthy enough to categorize where literate or illiterate people fit in. Even though everyone is judged by their literacy, the meaning is different in every culture. Therefore, there isn’t a true definition.…

Literacy is a mixture of critical reading, writing, thinking, and talking. In order for someone to reach their full potential, the person must master the skills of the levels below before they can reach the top. People do, however, learn at their own rate, and some may reach their fullest ability very young, while others may not reach it until late. Because of varying circumstances, some may not ever even reach the highest level.…

It made me wonder whether this study is accurate, now that I know a person whose negative literary experience negatively affected their literacy habits. I also wondered how Janae had snapped out of her negative state of mind towards literacy, back a positive motivated ideal. “Perseverance” was her one word answer to that question. She stated how after she had sulked about her bad review for a while, it was important to herself, and her future career to push aside the past heartache and move on to a new chapter of literacy. All of these things that Janae had experienced throughout her education really shaped the way she saw and reacted towards literacy.…

For me, written literacy has always been my area of weakness. A plan to improve these skills started before I commenced my first unit. A month prior to university studies I enlisted the help of ‘Grammar-Monster.com’. Most nights were spent tediously reading through the website page by page; this helped me refresh the limited information I had retained from school, as well as teach me the correct technical terminology for most grammatical aspects of writing. Once I had started my studies and had gained access to the Curtin website, I was able to use “The Learning Centre – Online programs” (Curtin University of Technology, 2015).…

Literacy as defined by the National Assessment of Adult Literacy is the ability to use printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one 's goals, and to develop one 's knowledge and potential. Illiteracy or being illiterate is the exact opposite, it is being unable to read or write successfully. In America illiteracy is a major problem. In fact “illiteracy is such a problem that in our country 44 million adults are unable to read a simple story to their children” (Staggering). The fact that 44 million adults cannot read a bedtime story to their beloved children is a fact that most of us cannot even begin to fathom.…
