Chemistry Class Reflection

My improvements and lesson plans from this semester are going to be particularly helpful for one class. The class is Integrated Physics and Chemistry (IPC). I will be teaching the physics side during my semester of student teaching. Most students in this class have Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and struggle with math. In addition to the curriculum preparation through my practicum, I feel I have a better understanding of how to scaffold lessons which will help me be a more effective teacher. Scaffolding does not only apply to new knowledge and skills. I should not assume students can remember previously learned skills. Students need help activating prior knowledge and transferring that knowledge to a new project (Bohlin, Durwin, …show more content…
My interactions with my cooperating teacher and the students followed a student teaching path. When the practicum began, I was introduced to my cooperating teacher and she let me co-teach her 7th and 8th grade science class that was working on a chemistry unit and one 7th grade science class that was working on a physics unit. I began observing and helping for both chemistry classes and one physics class. At the beginning of my practicum for the chemistry sections, I help prepare the lab and walked around to assist students as needed. My cooperating teacher would go through most of the lab step by step with the students giving directions out loud while the students followed along at their lab tables. Towards the end of the lab, the students were allowed to work independently. As my time in the classroom progressed, I would start instructing part of the labs. Eventually, I was instructing the entire lab while my cooperating teacher would walk around and assist the students. During classroom time for all classes, I started by observing my cooperating teacher and paying particular attention to her classroom management. Eventually I was teaching part of the chemistry classes and all of the physics …show more content…
I feel that my final grade in EDCI 346 should be an A because of my growth and implementation of the class materials during my practicum. Much of this has been explained in this reflection. I really got the most out of this class that I could and did extra work to help achieve this growth. Because of the work I put in, I feel my growth in lesson planning and leading group discussions has far exceeded what I thought it would be from one class. I believe this is due to the 5e lesson plan and the extra time I put into this class above the requirements. It made me think deeper into my lessons and helped me grow as a teacher. This is one reason I felt it was important to complete an entire unit in full. Teaching multiple classes in a row was also another added thing I did to grow as a teacher. I taught back to back physics classes. I feel having two classes in a row is a great way to learn about teaching. I could fix a problem on the fly in one class and then see how proper scaffolding or modeling can impact a lesson for the better. I was fortunate to be paired with my cooperating teacher and spent more than the required time with her. She was not only a great resource, but a great model for classroom management. I learned a great deal from her management in the laboratory. She taught me how to break down a lab and keep the students on
