Essay On My Dental Hygienist Experience

I am in my first module of the dental hygiene program at Fortis Institute. I came to this school from Harrisburg Area Community College already knowing that I wanted to be a dental hygienist; I have taken numerous dental courses and assumed I knew exactly what I was headed for and how clinic would be, was I ever wrong! This essay will look at my experience in the dental clinic with what I have learned from the observation, how the experience has changed my view of the program, if the experience enhanced or diminished my interest in the field, what fears I have moving forward and what I feel more confident about after the observation. To begin with, I have learned a decent amount from the observation in clinic, but I am only going to hit some major points that I found most important. It more so taught me things to remember and learn from. For example, be on time, be organized, ask questions, watch what you say and or do and to remind your patient about their appointment, so you don’t have an empty chair. The experience definitely enhanced my interest in the field! Being able to observe the hygienist(s) got me really excited for my future. It really showed me what to look forward to when I am in clinic and to be prepared and organized while in clinic. When I was observing, I noticed the one student do a competence, which she told me not to wait till last minute, get it out of the way as soon as possible. Just so I’m not rushing around at the end of the module trying to get all my competences done with two patients left of that module. Watching the student get graded made me so excited to be in her position in a couple years and being graded on something that I am very interested in.
