This country has always had an open door policy, which includes people of all religions or no religions at all. Despite this there are those that believe that a certain religious group should not be allowed to enter and live in the United States. During the 1800s, America allowed millions of immigrants to call our home their home. On the Statue of Liberty, our nation’s most significant symbol of freedom, lays a plaque that states, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore…” we pride ourselves on being a country of equality and acceptance yet we shun muslims who are and are not conceived in this country. People believe that most, if not all muslims are out to harm us and our way of life. According to sociologist Jen’nan Ghazal, there are two widespread assumptions fuel these fears. First, that there is one type of Islam and one type of Muslim, both characterized by violence and anti-democratic tendencies. Second, that being a muslim is the most noticeable thing about being a Muslim-American. According to the Washington Post over 40 percent of americans admit to feeling prejudice toward Muslims. A 2010 Gallup poll found that 43 percent of Americans said they felt at least a little prejudice towards Muslims. Nearly 1 in 10 admitted to a “great deal” of prejudice. The numbers were considerably higher than any other religious group. They are treated with more suspicion than any other religious group, on planes there are usually singled out. A muslim teen by the name of Ahmed Mohammed came to school on Monday and brought to school a clock that he was proud to have made on his own and was arrested for what police initially and falsely said was a hoax
