Mallard is an interesting character because of the way she reacts to her husband’s death. Typically, when a woman is faced with the death of a husband, they feel sadness where as Mrs. Mallards appears to feel happiness. The reason Mrs. Mallard reacts this way because it appears that her marriage restrained her. That is why she repeats the words “free” after she receives the news of her husbands death. She is now independent and has the will to live the rest of her life as she fits. In addition, that is why she dies when she sees her husband is alive because she realizes that she will be thrown back into the life where she was being oppressed.
