Hortense Spillers writes of black women performers and the “ontological edge” they possess in both presence and performance. She began singing at a young age, mostly because she didn't have a choice because her family was heavily into music and listening to the music of the times. At an early age she had success as a child actress on shows such as “As the world Turns” and my personal favorite the 1993 movie “Sister Act 2”. As a teen, she was approached to start a band called “The Fugees” along with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel. The Trio was a success with critically acclaimed albums such as “Blunted on Reality” and winning a Grammy for their album “The Score” which sold over 6 Million copies in the United States. One could point to Hill’s first ‘Miseducation” as the relationship (term being used cautiously) she had with group member Wyclef. The relationship or at closer the inability to manage the relationship lead to the split of the group in1997. But Lauryn Hill popularity created opportunity. Her style and musical flow was evident from her works with the Fugees. A blend of her Caribbean and African American recognition in her art as well as her ability to rap and sing put her as one of the top women in Hip-Hop and Neo Soul, R&B, Soul, and Reggae genres. In her first and only solo album, “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” represented how she had evolved as a now twenty –three year old at the time of its release.
