Essay On Meharry Medical College, School Of Medicine: Personal Statement

Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine’s mission and objectives encompasses what I hope to accomplish as a physician. Foremost, I want to be a primary care physician so I admire the school’s emphasis on teaching students to excel in the delivery of primary care. When I worked at Jumpstart, most of my students, in addition to living in a low-income area, spoke English as their second language. I improved their oral language skills and phonological awareness within a social environment. Accommodating linguistic differences inspires me to heal patients as well as motivate them to become independent agents of their health. My goal, as a primary care physician, would be to improve the dissemination of preventative care and health maintenance by presenting medical knowledge in a culturally and socially sensitive manner. While at Jumpstart, several of my preschool-aged students had eczema or asthma, and I learned how these conditions are associated with environmental factors found in low-income neighborhoods. I believe health education and preventative health measures targeted at youth, their families, and even expecting parents can be an effective strategy to combat the incidence of adult health issues. I aspire to use the research opportunities at Meharry Medical College to complement my experience working with children and deepen my understanding of health factors impacting disadvantaged youth. Overall, I would be elated to attend Meharry Medical College. With its plethora of quality academic resources, I believe Meharry would be the optimal school for me to study health disparities affecting underserved communities and shape my work as a primary care
