Two perspective on the state of marriage in the United States are the martial decline perspective and the martial resiliency perspective. Martial decline perspective is a pessimistic view of the current state of marriage that includes ther beliefs that (1) persona; happiness has become more important than martial commitment and family obligations and (2) the decline in lifelong marriage and the increase in single-parent families have contributed to a variety of social problems. In the United States, women are more than four times more likety to be victims of IPV than are men (Bureau of Justice Statistics 2011). When women assault their male partners, the assaults tend to be acts of retaliation or self-defense (Johnson 2001 ; Swan et al. 2008).
