From middle school to high school, band became a vital part of my life. It was all I knew, it was where I felt comfortable, and this was where I pratically began learning about my leadership skills. However, my curiousity grew when I was introduced to Class Council. I thought that there was no difference, and I naively thought that since I have been a part of a leadership role for about 4 years, everyone knows me, so I thought Class Council could not be so hard. I was terribly wrong.…

A section leader has to be a good teacher to instruct the rookies and if really needed then returning marchers. Humbleness is an important quality of a leader because being a section leader does not mean you are the best and you are higher than others; all it means is that Mr. Oubre gave it to you. Compassion because this are just kids, and this is just marching band, also you want to build friendships not dominance. One would need confidence because a section leader should set the example for the section and play loud and proud. Working on the HHS Band leadership team has been one of the most difficult but rewarding jobs of my high school career. My junior year I was selected as the clarinet co-section leader with another one of my good friends Laura. Both of us are very strong and confident leaders, so throughout the marching band season, there was a bit of a power struggle. We didn't know how to properly balance our authority in the group to command equal respect, and we didn't know how to work as a team. Through my experiences with Laura, I learned that leadership is so much more than directing a group.…
