In Haiti, 11.6% of children under five years old are underweight, while 21.9% of children under five are stunting (World Health Organization, 2017). Malnutrition and undernutrition in children is a major problem, with many consequences. If children are not properly nourished they are not going to grow up and be able to make money for themselves or the country. Children and women are affected by malnutrition than most out of the whole population of Haiti. Women and children living in rural areas, and have little to no more are the most at risk. Children and women who are not properly nourished are not going to be able to work, or take care of their family. There needs to be an implementation of food program to help improve the nutrition of the child population.
Nature and Magnitude Haiti is an island country that suffers many natural disasters from earthquakes to hurricanes. Since dealing with natural disasters, this can cause some of the issues that many of the women and children in Haiti struggle with in getting a hold of food. Many of these children are skin and bones, their ribs sticking out and their bellies distended. These mothers are giving their children the food to keep them from being malnutritioned. As the women give their children all of the food, they are then being malnutritioned. The women who are pregnant and malnutrition are then even more malnutrition due to the majority of her nutrients going to the growing human being.
