Essay On Mahler Orchestra

The Mahler Orchestra concert was performed in Baker Hall at 8pm, December 9, 2016. The audience consisted of around 200 people and there were a number of students, faculty, retired seniors and orchestra alumnus. The event was more formal and many were dressed appropriately for the concert. The general response was very respectful and the applause was only given when the conductor’s arms were down. I truly enjoyed this performance and I was impressed by the philharmonic orchestra. The performance opening piece was Kaiser-Waltzer by Johann Stauss Jr. This waltz piece had a fast tempo and its triple meter beat allowed the audience to stay awake and kick start the performance. I was especially impressed by the cellist’s solo. He did an exceptional job with expression and dynamics. The cello is my favorite string instrument because it has the warmth and depth that the violin doesn’t. I was surprised that the intermission was right after the …show more content…
I was fascinated by the lights because the stage was dim with red lights in the background. However, they were experiencing technical difficulties and the conductor restarted the piece from the beginning. The opening piece was written in forte so the string orchestra was accompanied by a strong percussion section. I was impressed by the violin section and their ability to use their whole bow and draw out beautiful legato notes. I was surprised by the cow bell because it almost didn’t sound like it was part of the music. It stood out too much and overpowered the orchestra in some sections. In addition, the violin and french horn solo was not together. I could tell that the violinist was trying to follow the french horn player, but the french horn was rushing at a considerably faster tempo. However, the first movement was my favorite because of the cello solo. I thought it was beautiful and he did an excellent job with his

I appreciated the effort and music the mariachi group gave in their performance. I noticed how the trumpet usually took the main role while the violins supported the trumpets voice, usually by pizzicato. The guitar and guitarrón were mainly the background music that played the same rhythm over and over. It made me realize the beauty of…

On May 10th, I had the opportunity to the “The Stony Brook Roots Ensemble. This was my first experience witnessing traditional American music played live. The venue and the ambiance were completely different from my time at the orchestra at the Staller Center. The performance took place in the Wang Center Chapel, which had surprisingly great acoustics than expected. At the orchestra there was very strict etiquette when in attendance, where one must be incredibly quiet in order to not disturb anyone else.…

For the soloists, it was really powerful and seeing Dr. Sung Ae Lee move more than usual. The dynamics went loud to more loud, soft to loud, and slowly fades and pauses and chords strikes making a performance to be alive. There was a balance between the melody lines and the accompaniment giving a flowing sound and soothing tone. I enjoyed watching and hearing the cello for the first time with the piano were it accompaniments each other. There were no awful mistakes but the piece with the cello…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

1 in D major, “Titan,” was performed next. It was much longer in duration than the first piece. It showed uniqueness in that it incorporated everyday sounds into the music, such as bulge calls, bird songs, and dance tunes, which provided for a very wide variety of tone colors. The symphony began with a thick-textured undertone in the strings and a two-note “hunting call” in the woodwinds, which persisted throughout the piece. Also present was a bright fanfare in the trumpets, followed by a light descending melody played by the entire orchestra.…

Walking into the auditorium, I immediately noticed that the atmosphere of the concert was completely different from that of the classical concert I attended weeks earlier. To begin with, it seemed like there was much more of an audience. Everyone seemed excited for the concert to start. As for myself, I was also excited because, on the very front of the program, it said that there was a guest artist that was going to perform with the ensemble. The performers wore more of a business casual look, some were a little more dressed up than others, but overall they looked very well dressed.…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

In the string section all the musician’s bows glide up and down, but no one is ever out of place. The brass and woodwinds produced clear intonation. The percussionists have to subtly double check the sound of their instruments before playing. Under the conductor, the entire orchestra operated very smoothly and produced beautiful music. Which is the exact kind of accompaniment an orchestra should provide a visiting soloist.…

111, I found the first movement to be extremely interesting, especially because of the time signature that it was written in. It appears that the first movement is written in 9/8, which I was not expecting to hear. The first movement puts a lot of the focus onto the cello, which I enjoyed listening to. The sound of the cello was prominently featured, which I enjoyed. It seems that the violins imitate the sound the cello is producing about twenty seconds into the piece, which creates almost a call and response type of effect.…
