What responsibilities and rights come to a citizen of the United States at the age of 18? At 18 years old, you can decide who you want to lead the United States by voting. You can also decide if you want to take a bullet for our country and enroll in the armed forces. At 18, you are now even trialed as an adult if you commit a crime. You have all these adult responsibilities and even consequences once you turn 18, but you can’t even make the decision to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages. I think that at the age of 18, adults should be able to make their own decision on purchasing and consuming alcoholic beverages; and that the minimum legal drinking age, MLDA, should be lowered from 21 years old to 18 years old. The minimum legal drinking age should be lowered to 18 years old because of the simple fact that 18 is the age of adulthood in the United States. According to procon.org “Turning 18 [years old] entails receiving the rights and responsibilties of adulthood.” This means that at the age of 18, one is responsible enough to be considered as an adult. Since one is considered an adult at 18, they should have all the right to make their own decisions on the consumption of alcohol.
