By depriving the jews of their basic human needs of food and shelter, the German Army ensured that their prisoners would be weak, therefore they were not able to retaliate or escape. The German Army wanted to have complete control over these people's lives, and they succeeded in that. They destroyed families and the jews even started losing faith in their religion. Elie Wiesel talked about how on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the last day of the year, everyone could feel the tension. They wondered if it really was their last day. The people in these camps did not care about anything else but staying alive at this point. Some didn´t even wish to live anymore, they didn't want to live like animals anymore even if it meant not living at all.
