How do the characters in Lord of the Flies relate to our personalities? In the allegorical novella, Lord Of The Flies by William Golding, A large group of english schoolboys crash on a deserted island with no adults or supplies. Two of the boys named Piggy and Ralph find each other and instantly connect and work together to try and build a civilization. Unfortunately for the boys, a headstrong leader called Jack’s only interested is in having fun and hunting meat on the island. Ralph is focused on building a life on the island and keeping them alive, Keeping their humanity intact, staying clear of savage ways and getting rescued. In Lord Of The Flies the author uses many literary elements including symbolism. Symbolism is an object, person, place, or an event that stands for something else. One example of symbolism in the novella is the white conch shell. Ralph and Piggy find the conch shortly after crashing on the island: “S’right. It”s a shell! I seen one before. On someone's back wall. A conch he called it. It”s ever so valuable” (15). The conch is used to call assemblies and to keep order and a class on the deserted island. Piggy greatly respected the conch’s power and was devastated when a follower of Jack smashed it to bits. The destruction of the pearl white conch represented the destruction of all civilization that the boys possessed on the island and the destruction of the little humanity they had left.
