I did not like the fact that Satish Kumar who is Pi’s biology teacher at school was completely taken out of the movie. He was Pi’s favorite teacher and an atheist who sees the zoo as his temple. He is the one that influences Pi to study zoology in college. Satish Kumar told Pi, "When I was your age, I lived in bed, racked with polio. I asked myself every day, 'Where is God? Where is God? Where is God?' God never came. It wasn't God who saved me – it was medicine. The reason is my prophet and it tells me that as a watch stops, so we die. It's the end. If the watch doesn't work properly, it must be fixed here and now by us. One day we will take hold of the means of production and there will be justice on earth."(Martel 20). Another man named Mr.S who was Muslim tried to get Pi to study religion at college. Pi was able to tolerate all religions because while growing up he saw different viewpoints from different people about religions. This would have helped get the message about faith in the movie but I don’t think that was in Ang Lee’s mindset of how the movie should be portrayed. There was a character who was actually added to the movie that was not in the book at all and that character is Pi’s love interest, Anandi. Pi was sent by his mother to work for a dance class and take his mind off of things and this is where Pi met Anandi. Pi adopts an emotional dedication for Anandi and makes his departure from Pondicherry, India to Winnipeg, Canada even more difficult. He uses her as a source of his motivation by recalling her image throughout various scenes of the
