Another huge factor in School was how education was geared towards reading, writing, and arithmetic. The students were also trained for everyday life in the colonies. There was very little emphasis towards social studies, science, music, art, or physical education. The Bible was a mandatory part of the curriculum. There was also no separation between religion and the schools. Teachers also went to normal schools, which were 2 year schools and specifically designed for teacher training. Teachers were not college graduates as they are today. All children wrote using a quill dipped in ink, which sometimes blotted on the page, so they sprinkled on pounce. Most children wrote in a copybook because paper was so expensive that the schools could not afford it.Some boys were lucky enough to go to grammar school and sometimes even college but never girls. Girls were given lessons on how to run a home. It wasn't even expected for girls to spend any of their time reading! Some of the different big differences are what the purpose of school was and who went to school. Another big difference was the different learning tools and materials they used to teach various children how to learn. I always was glad that I didn't live during the colonial times because school and life in general was very rough and If I had to live in the colonial times I know that I wouldn't have been where I ended up in todays
