Life from 1500 to 1800 was extremely different compared to the modern world. Blainey (2001, pp. 409) observed that during this time in all parts of the world, life revolved around the production of food and living close to the breadline was a reality for typical families. Whilst there were still a few million nomadic hunting and gathering societies most of the population were farmers by the year 1800. During this time all clothing was made by hand by processes that took a lot of time and labour; therefore clothing was purchased in much lower quantities. Most people had very meagre wardrobes, with on outfit for Sunday and one for every other day of the week (Wheeler 2015). Compare this to today’s population, the majority of which have more clothes then they can wear in a year. It’s not only the amount of clothing that has changed significantly since the 1800s, Blainey (2001, pp. 418) observes that today, clothing is made from synthetics (fabrics made by man using chemicals), however during the 1800’s clothing was made from raw materials that were grown on the land.
