Living Life as a Gladiator What would life be like to live as a gladiator? Some gladiators loved the thrill of fighting. Gladiators were worshiped and hailed by the spectators. Many gladiators hated fighting to the death in arenas and coliseums. Most gladiators were enslaved and forced into this lifestyle. What is a gladiator? According to American Heritage Dictionary (1985) “A gladiator is a person trained to entertain the public by engaging in mortal combat in the ancient Roman arenas” (Page 560). There were gladiators known for good deeds they had done. One gladiator known for good deeds was Spartacus; he freed a lot of gladiators out of slavery and led a rebellion. One of the most popular were Spartacus. Spartacus was a Thracian warrior that was a slave from being captured.(Listverse.com # 1 para.1) Spartacus escaped slavery and perused a rebellion freeing many other slaves. (para.1) Spartacus spent a winter, training slaves to prepare for war. (para. 2) Spartacus and his rebellion went into war with nearly 70,000 free gladiators. (para.2) They won against legions of men to kill Spartacus and his troops. (para.2) Marcus Licinius Crassus sent 50,000 well-trained Roman soldiers to kill him.(para.2) In this job they succeed trapping Spartacus and killing him. (para.2) Before Spartacus freed the slaves he was an excellent gladiator. Spartacus won over 500 fights. There were many types of gladiators. The types of gladiators all have different fighting styles and different armor and weapons. The life of a gladiator was very rough. Gladiators did not have it easy; they made their money by getting cut open. Slave gladiators did not even get paid; they were forced to fight. Battle was the most important part of a gladiator life. There were some gladiators that loved fighting; were they volunteered to become a gladiator and made a living out of it. Gladiators that volunteered were usually impressive fighters. Free gladiators made great money. Most free gladiators enjoy the roaring crowds. Gladiators are very big part of Rome’s history and an enjoyable topic to learn
