I never thought that growing up with severe asthma could be a good thing. I hated being in and out of the hospital and I hated the feeling of having an attack. Although my parents always tried to make things better for me, not being able to breathe normally was still an awful feeling. Within the past few years, I've begun to think seriously about what I want to do with my life after high school and I realized that I want to help people and I want to make a difference in the world just like the nurses did for me when I was young.

In my opinion, the nursing field seems like one of the most rewarding careers available. Even though I suffer from asthma and it would be incredible to help others with the same issues that I have I would like to minor in American Sign Language so that I could help and interact with deaf children and adults. I believe that my ten years of 4-H and other various clubs and activities that I have participated in throughout my life have helped me prepare for my future by teaching me valuable life lessons and skills such as responsibility, time management, assertiveness and decision making. These are lessons and skills that I will always hold with me. Being involved in various activities throughout high school made for a great experience and that’s why when attending IUPUI I hope to be just as involved and participate in activities such as Greek Life and the rowing team.

A dilemma that I faced, and still am facing is simply the decision about what I want to do with my life after my high school career. In my freshman year of high school my goal was simply to get through the year in one piece. I was forced to conform to my new environment and all the strict rules that came along with it. Along with that it was the sudden transition from being the "big dogs" as eighth graders at my middle school to being "fresh-meat" in my first year high school. With so much attention placed on me as a freshman like on the varsity basketball team, where I was constantly forced to prove my worth to the coach and the players, to stepping out of my comfort zone and performing in a mandatory play for the rest of the the school as…

I walked into the familiar main entrance of the school, crossing my arms and setting my face into what I thought was an intimidating glare. Although I looked like an angry toddler, with my round face and childish glower, my attitude came across very clearly: I was not happy at all to be back at school. After getting into a huge fight with my friend group earlier that year, I was starting high school essentially friendless. It wasn’t as if I didn’t have another group of people to fall back onto.…

Freshman year of high school, I was ecstatic. Yes, being shoved in hallways and three minutes late to every class because of overpopulation everyday sucked, but I was finally a high schooler. Soon, I learned that rumors about being stuffed in a locker was the least of my worries. I was compelled to make life changing decisions about my future and whether or not I wanted to go to college. My life began to spiral downward before fifth grade began. I found myself an endless loop over summer vacation of waking up, experiencing the day as a blur, sleep, then repeat. This drove me to discover a new way to spend my day. On the television I noticed a recurring advertisement for a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. For some students, choosing to attend college after high school is an easy decision. Some are expected by their families to continue into higher education post high school graduation. I know a few people that are so motivated to attend college that they already know for sure what they are going to major in before they were even freshmen in high school. For me, I was not falling into that category. College was something I did not consider throughout my time in high school.…

Graduating high school is supposed to be the most magical and freeing time of any young-adult’s life; at least that is what the movies would like everyone to believe. Coming into the “real world” straight from high school can actually be a terrifying time. Like a colt attempting to walk after coming from his mother’s womb, learning to support oneself is extremely demanding. The expectation of graduating high school was that I would have no more school, have fun all the time, be independent, and I would have freedom, but I was surely wrong. The reality was that I would have college, a job, I would be living with my parents still, and I’d have no free time.…

Through my experience, my freshman and sophomore years as a musician were terrifying. On top of the shock of the new atmosphere at school, I had to play my instrument with and in front of others, which was quite a stretch for me at the time. However, after I did not make an Illinois Allstate ensemble my junior year, my approach to these nerve-wracking situations completely changed. Instead of thinking failing negatively, those uncomfortable experiences actually made me improve as I had taken more auditions.…
