For years there has been debate on the legalization of marijuana. Marijuana is a plant known by many names; weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, etc. It is a mixture of dried, shredded leaves and flowers of a hemp plant called Cannabis sativa. Marijuana can be smoked like a cigarette, with a pipe, or brewed in tea as is typical with medical purposes. The main chemical in marijuana has an intoxicating effect and is known as tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. There are people with different views on whether or not marijuana should be legalized because of the intoxicating effect marijuana has. The legalization of marijuana continues to be questioned, as opponents believe it is a harmful drug, while proponents argue that marijuana is not harmful and even helpful to cancer patients.
It is said that marijuana was first discovered in China, in 2737 BC. The Emperor of China was said to have found medical benefits when using marijuana. This information can not be verified, but according to The Archaeology of Ancient China there were hemp fibers found in Chinese pottery going back 10,000 years. Years later the Spanish introduced marijuana to America in 1545. Marijuana became a major crop for the English for a short period of time, and then was forgotten for many years.
