Heroes are often thought to be these god-like people who always save the day and get the girl. Most stories concerning heroes and their deeds seem to follow Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces by heart; however, not all heroic tales follow it step by step. There are the instances where steps have been skipped or are out of order. In Dragon Age: Origins, the protagonist follows the steps to becoming an enlightened individual; however, it doesn’t end with the heroine going home with the elixir or even living past the final confrontation with the darkness. As stated by Don Bronzite in his article “The Hero's Journey - Mythic Structure of Joseph Campbell's Monomyth,” “It's his safe place. His everyday life where we learn crucial details about our Hero, his true nature, capabilities and outlook on life.” If the character is to remain where she is not challenged, she is not capable of bettering herself. When the Elven woman is eager to marry her husband and remain ignorant to the impending darkness, she is unable to save herself, let alone others, if it were to strike. She feels her call to adventure when several women, herself included, are handpicked by the local Arl’s son after he had interrupted her wedding in order to have a handful of playthings for the night and then must fight her way through his guards in order to save herself and the other captives.
Her refusal of the call of adventure is when she denies Duncan’s offer to join the Grey Warden order and escape prosecution for the murder of the Arl’s son and guards; however, her refusal results in her conscription into the order where she is forced to become aware of the impending darkness despite wanting to allow someone else to resolve the civil war and the impending Darkspawn invasion. As stated in Scott LaBarge’s article “Why Heroes are Important,” in regards to the villainous acts sometimes performed by heroic individuals in the name of the greater
