Essay On John Proctor's Death In The Crucible

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Salem is put into a state of insanity and a constant plague of hysteria in the late 1600’s from the idea of witches. The book takes a dark and serious tone by showing the hangings of innocent people who have been convicted of being witches. However, in The Crucible the main character, John Proctor is hung at the end of the story which marks the end of the play. Ironically, John Proctor is the biggest reason for his own execution. After being turned on by Mary Warren, John Proctor runs out of the court and into a lake shouting, “God is dead!”. This quote in particular puts the entire town of Salem against him and leads to his execution. Proctor’s death can be ultimately be contributed to himself. God damns our kind especially and we will burn, we will burn together!” exclaiming that he believes that all the citizens of Salem will be damned. At this point, Proctor laughs maniacally marking his full mental collapse. This quote also explains how Proctor believes that his very own town of Salem has been tainted and plagued by the fake accounts of witchcraft from the girls and the wrongful hangings of the innocent. On the other hand, a lot of people can say that it was by far Abigail’s fault and she is the biggest reason behind Proctor’s death, it was Proctor who wanted to have an affair with Abigail, and if he were not to have had it with Abigail, none of the wrongful executions would have happened. Although, when looking at Proctor’s execution, it is obvious to see that Proctor had the chance to keep his life, but instead he held his name’s importance higher than his life’s
