Early on in the play, Abigail flirts with John and reminds him of their past together; and proceeds to hint towards having a future together (page 22). Rather than giving the response that Abigail was expecting and hoping, to receive from him, Proctor ignores what she said and proclaims that they’ll have no future ahead of them. In a scene that was omitted from Act 2, Abigail mentions of how good of a wife she’ll be, and as a response John Proctor ignores her words (page 150). Instead of acknowledging what Abigail has said, John decides to disregard her statements and instead mentions his wife during their conversation. The larger message behind the admirable character John Proctor in the play, The Crucible, is to show the reader that they can redeem themselves even though they’ve made mistakes in life. Early on in the play, John Proctor has rejected the flirtatious remarks that he has received from Abigail Williams. In the courtroom, Proctor was accused of lying while he was fighting for the truth. Then later in the play, he openly admitted to lying during a confession which resulted in him being executed. All of these actions that John took in order to correct his past mistakes are what make him the most admirable character.
