I can only have an opinion about what I saw and to me Jerry did not appear to show any diminished emotional expression. Her obsession is contamination and her compulsion is washing. The anxiety that follows is irrational and provoked by perceived threats that are extremely exaggerated. Her beliefs and fears about almost everything being infested with germs has made her a prisoner of her own mind and body. She spends her entire day (every day) trying to wash away or decontaminate herself and even the food she eats three bites at a time. Many people are afraid of germs, however Bernice has taken her fear to a new level. Her obsessions are far-fetched and while it is a fact that there are germs Bernice believes everything is contaminated with them.
