Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in U.S. history. Jamestown was an island near the coast of Virginia. The English came of three ships called the Susan Constant, Discovery, and the Godspeed. It took about 4 months for the English to get there. The English chose to build their fort at a swamp.The fort was built as a triangle with other parts coming off of it. The swamp’s pros were that it was not inhabited by Virginian Indians though they attacked the fort from time to time. The area was also great for the fort because it was easy to defend. The year after the English came several more ships came carrying tons of different people from different countries. After they came, glassware turned into the first item ever exported to Europe. Several more items were exported to Europe including, tobacco, crop, lumber, etc. Though the English had food, they didn’t have enough. Because the English didn’t have enough food the English made a supply mission called the Third Supply. The Third Supply had the most supplies ever delivered to Jamestown. The Third Supply traveled of 7 ships with the biggest being the newest also, the Sea Venture. While the ships were heading to the fort from Plymouth, they got stuck in a storm which was most likely a hurricane. Most of the ships made it to Jamestown but some of them, including the Sea Venture, had to crash on the coast of Bermuda. The English had almost run out of supplies at Jamestown and was in need of the food and supplies of the Sea Venture. The time when the English didn’t have enough food and supplies was called the “Starving Time”. There is evidence that during the Starving Time, the English were reduced to cannibalism.
