One of the main reasons that England began the settlement of North America was for money so they could be the wealthiest. Another reason was religious freedom. England wanted to be able to have colonies where there was no forced religion. They also wanted to be the most powerful and have the most land. In all, they wanted “God, Gold, and Glory,” or nationalism, imperialism and mercantilism. They more powerful than Spain and had a really big sense of nationalism. Some of the main problems with Jamestown were the government, distance from England, location, troubles with the Native Americans, and famine. There was a big distinction in the government between the “higher-ups” and normal citizens which caused some issues. It was five-thousand miles away from England, so it difficult to transport food and supplies back and forth, especially with the war. With the location, it was in an area that was not very sanitary and malaria was very prominent. The Native Americans did not like their home to be invaded and that caused dismay between them and the English who wanted to claim their land and call it their own. Lastly, in the winter of 1609, there were not many supplies and food and the Native Americans did not like the English so they treated them bad and many people starved to death.
