Essay On Italian American Food

An Italian American Christmas Eve:

Being of Italian American descent food plays a major part in all holiday celebrations; let’s face it, food plays a major part in my day-to-day life! Christmas Eve in my family meant a fish and seafood feast. The traditional, typical meal includes at least seven fish dishes. The celebration is meant to commemorate the wait for the birth of Jesus (Vigilla di Natale) at midnight. Christmas Eve was considered a fasting day which means that no meat can be eaten. Leave it to Italians to turn a day of fasting into an evening of feasting.
Many families serve seven or 13 different fish dishes. Why? Seven to symbolize the number of days that God took to create the Universe and is used in the Bible to mean perfection.

Add the garlic and continue to cook until they are soft but not browned. 5. Pour in the sauce and stir in the crushed red pepper. Go easy on that as you can always add more if you want a bit more bite. 6. Simmer the mixture over very low heat, stirring often while the pasta cooks. 7. When the pasta is done and drained stir in the sauce and adjust the seasonings to taste. Add some pasta cooking water if the mixture seems to dry or “tight”. 8. Sprinkle with the fried bread crumbs, optional Parmesan, and then serve immediately.

Hopefully this has inspired you to create a seafood feast for your family. For more information and recipes look through Italian cookbooks ,search the internet, and talk to Italian American Grandmothers, myself included. Please feel free to contact me at Alexandrialeto@Hotmail.com or 585-534-5696.

To most Romans the main meal of the day was in the late afternoon, from around the times of four to six. The morning and noon meals were normally light snacks, sometimes only bread and water. Since there was no refrigeration, slaves and free people shopped daily at the shops and street carts or in the city’s town square. Many of the foods we consider Italian today did not exist in early Rome. While the wealthy enjoyed spices that have been imported, in their meals, reclined on pillows and were served by slaves, many of the extremely poor or homeless ate cereal…

The Serious Eats website claims to be the “world’s most trusted authority on deliciousness”, where people come in search of “definitive recipes, hard-core food science and trailblazing techniques”. It is where I found the article Spaghetti with Cacio e Pepe is the Ultimate Roman-Style Midnight Snack. Lucky Peach is a food and lifestyle quarterly magazine where I also read about cacio e pepe in their section titled Three Dishes. The articles were equally interesting, contained recipes to make the meal and had striking and well styled photos of the food and techniques. Cacio e pepe, as explained in both articles, is a simple Roman dish made with pasta, pecorino cheese and pepper.…

According to Cinotto (2013), they created their own values and cultural traditions while only selectively keeping traditions they had known before. This can be seen through cuisine as it has been noted that foods that are seen as culturally Italian now, such as spaghetti and meatballs, may not have been ethnically based but instead ethnically created as women, the caretakers of the family, used what they had available to them (Cinotto, 2013). Cinotto (2013) also notes that this new creativity in cuisine rose from the parent’s disgust due to what their children were being fed in public…

On Thanksgiving, people have fun with their family and friends. It’s a day where they share a meal and drink alcohol together. However, in my family, we do not celebrate Thanksgiving because the holidays are different because of our culture. In my country, Dominican Republic celebrates Christmas Eve, which is the same as Thanksgiving, but the food is different compared to the food in America. Christmas Eve is still celebrated on December 24th; the food that the family makes is Pernil, rice, beans, and some wine.…
