Choosing to identify one’s religion can be a means of expressing political solidarity and supporting their people, as well as rejecting the normative understanding from receiving countries. An overwhelming 76% of Canadian Muslims feels that religion is important and 65% of Canadian Muslims participate in religious activity a minimum of weekly. Various factors contribute to the formation of religious identities. Based on the survey conducted, it was found that people typically turn to religion for the following reasons: no family or friend network, sense of identity, religion fills a void, shared feelings on being outsiders, and more. The survey conducted studied four different Muslim groups, Afghans, Iranians, Pakistanis, and Palestinians, to exemplify the differences between Muslim groups and how they each identify with being Muslim, and how the population varies within those groups. While all groups diverge in experience, all, unfortunately, are subject to discrimination within western society, resulting in an intensified sense of religious
