Essay On Is Brutus A Betrayer Or A Patriot

It is commonly debated whether Brutus is a patriot or a betrayer. After analyzing his dialogue, his actions, and his interactions with those around him, I fully support the notion that Brutus is a patriot, and not a betrayer. “What villain touch'd his body, that did stab, and not for justice?” Brutus states in Act 4, proving that he is aware that Caesar’s assassination was committed as some sort of act of justice. Some may attempt to counter my argument, and state that Brutus is a betrayer, and not a patriot, but I firmly believe that the intensity of his actions against Caesar only proves that he is a patriot because he was willing to sacrifice his relationship with Caesar and kill him for the good of his empire, Rome. A common argument that people support is that Brutus was a betrayer to Caesar because he conspired with those who despised him and allowed him to be killed. Based off of the information given to me in the play, and in videos, Caesar would have hurt the empire of Rome. “Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look; He thinks too much: such men are dangerous”, Caesar once said. This shows that he acknowledges a potential enemy, but does not take action upon it, proving how naïve he is. Brutus knew this, and therefore he acted upon it. I do not believe he acted out of spite against Caesar, rather he did what he believed was the best for Rome, which supports my belief that Brutus is a patriot. After the Battle of Phillippi Brutus was so distraught over what he had done to Rome that he committed suicide. He was willing to take his life because he saw it as the only punishment that could make up for what had just occurred.
