Essay On Integrity In To Kill A Mockingbird

In the novels, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines, a key, integrity trait is portrayed. Integrity is a trait that can only be realized when we have strong role models, teachers or guidance. The first role models for children are caretakers because they are the first connection to the outside world that children have and, they are trusted and given tremendous respect. Unfortunately, some people do not have the best role models or any role models at all which is where some traits such as integrity and respect can become non-existent or cease to exist. However, sometimes the right teachers can put these individuals on the right path. Integrity can be developed through the upbringing of an individual. …show more content…
Although she uses a stern tone, she does not embarrass the children to get her point across. For example, when Scout is caught making Walter feel uncomfortable and unwelcome, Calpurnia calmly calls her to the kitchen and tells her to let Walter enjoy his food however he chooses to do so. When Scout argues with Calpurnia she says "Hush your mouth! Don't matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house's yo' comp'ny, and don't you let me catch you remarkin' on their ways like you was so high and mighty! Yo' folks might be better'n the Cunninghams but it don't count for nothin' the way you're disgracin' 'em—if you can't act fit to eat at the table you can just sit here and eat in the kitchen!”(Lee 24-25). Cal is teaching Scout to respect peoples’s individuality, which not only teaches Scout respect, but also teaches her not everyone is the same. Respect is a key component in having strong morals which is a big part of integrity. Calpurnia portrays integrity herself when she defends the children at First Purchase African M.E. Church “Lula stopped, but she …show more content…
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Bob Ewell does not appear to have any morals and is not honest at all. First of all, he lies in court when he states “I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella!” (Lee 84) in doing so, he puts an innocent man behind bars, who is later shot and killed. Moreover, instead of attempting to correct his wrongdoings, he tries to kill two innocent children. Bob Ewell displays no signs of ever being taught integrity. In conjunction, Jefferson in A Lesson Before Dying is even worse because Miss Emma had raised him to be a respectful young man, but in one moment, as he is put in jail, he forgets all of her teachings. Instead of calling for help or staying with Mr. Gropé while he was dying, Jefferson steals money from the cash register and cracks open a bottle of alcohol. Furthermore, he refuses to speak to his godmother or others visiting him and mentions things that he knows will upset her. For instance, he says “I’m a old hog… Just a old hog they fattening up to kill for Christmas…” (Gaines 83). It appears that without integrity people can become monsters but in some cases integrity is not lost

Seeing Scout treated her guest horribly, Calpurnia pulled her into the kitchen, spanked her while saying, “Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo’ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was high and mighty!” (Lee 33) This piece of evidence illustrates that even though Scout didn’t have a mother who could have teaches her in behaving nicely towards others, Calpurnia already did an excellent job in nurturing Scout and shows her the appropriate manner that she should have.…

Many people mistake the word “integrity” to hold the same weight as the word “honesty;” however, Oxford Dictionary defines integrity as: “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.” Therefore, we can conclude that being honest is only a part of having integrity, so just because someone says what he or she means, doesn’t mean that this person has integrity. In “The Insufficiency of Honesty,” Stephen L. Carter discusses the misconception that many people have about the difference between honesty and integrity by presenting examples of how people that are completely honest lack a sense of moral behavior. Through a clearly reasoned discussion, Carter raises some insightful points about how honesty alone cannot make someone or some action morally correct.…

For example, when Scout made a remark about Walter Cunningham putting syrup on his dinner, Cal pulls Scout into the kitchen and says, “That boy’s yo’ comp’ny and if he wants to eat up the tablecloth you let him, you hear?”(32). Scout questioning Walter Jr., surely makes him feel uncomfortable, and in a way harms him. Calpurnia disciplines Scout for her behavior, which teaches Scout that she should do no harm to others, in this case, Walter, just because she thinks that she’s better than him. Next, when Cal takes the children to her church and gets criticized by one of the church members, she defends her decision and says, “It’s the same God ain’t it?”(158). In this scene, Cal is a victim of undeserved violence because she was verbally attacked by Lula for doing nothing wrong.…

Mercy College defines integrity as, “Moral wholeness, soundness, uprightness, honesty and sincerity as the basis of trustworthiness.” I personally feel that integrity encompasses not only all of these characteristics, but also the ability to apply these characteristics in one’s everyday life. Someone who displays true integrity does not act honestly and sincerely just in easy situations, but also in the most difficult. Integrity is a value everyone should strive to perfect both professionally and personally.…

As Carter talked about integrity, he gave examples about how the Supreme Court uses the Constitution’s structural integrity. Also, he mentioned ages, languages, religion traditions, and schools for our children. The author asserts that schools should focus on teaching students, right from wrong and the meaning of being a good person.…

If Jem hadn't gone on an anti-camellia rampage, Atticus might have made his son go read to Mrs. Dubose anyway, in order "to see what real courage is" (11.153)—not using a gun, but fighting for a cause you believe in even if you know you probably won't win.s that why she jumped Francis? Yes. Atticus asks why Scout's asking for a definition if she understood it well enough to make it the reason for a fight, and Scout says that it was the way Francis said it that got on her nerves. Atticus tells her that the term doesn't mean anything, but it's something "ignorant, trashy people use […] when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves" (11.107), and that even higher-class people use it sometimes when they want to put someone down.…

In the past, there was a lot of injustice, and there are a lot of books that showed it. A specific book I’m writing about today is, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In this novel, Justice is influenced by age and race, and is distributed unequally in a small town called Maycomb County, specifically when; Tom Robinson, The Ewells, Atticus and his two children, Jem and Scout are affected. Firstly, the Ewells are allowed to do whatever they want, because they are lazy, and white.…
