Essay On Improving My Writing Skills

Improved Essays
College can be full of twist and turns. Especially when you have a full schedule. Coming into English 101 I didn’t feel too confident about my writing I have never been a great writer. Kathleen Reiman has been a great factor in improving my writing skills this semester and I want to continue to improve. We have gone over so much in this class, and I felt I kept improving with each essay. The final portfolio that was due for this class consisted of my two best written essays which were “Divorce’s Positive and Negative Effects in America,” and “The Controversial Topic on Illegal Immigration.” The first essay in my portfolio was a cause and effect paper on divorce. This was my best piece of writing for this class, but there were still a lot of changes I could make. One of the problems was that my fluency of my essay was not quite up to par. Also grammar, and wording was another problem that was occurring in this essay. I needed to reread my essay, and analyze it carefully to avoid these things. For the portfolio I went back and reread my essay while …show more content…
This essay was a problem and solution essay where I choose a very controversial topic on illegal immigration and how to fix it. The changes I made to this essay were similar to the divorce essay I wrote which shows that I still need work in these areas. The problems that were occurring in this essay were once again fluency, grammar, wording, and back up my facts. To help polish this essay up I went back through and reread the essay a couple of times working on the parts that I knew needed some fine tuning done. Once I would read through it, and fix some errors I would then again read through it to see if I missed something. From this essay I learned that I need to make sure I was backing up my ideas with reliable sources. Also still need to make sure a reread my essays to catch simple mistakes before submitting

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

After reading the final copy of my feminist paper I decided to first focus on the errors the teacher notice throughout my essay. For the Story of an Hour paragraphs I refer back to the book for more examples to help back up the point I was trying to make. Especially in comparing Mrs. Mallard to her sister Josephine. Also, after adding the example I expanded my sentence by explaining how the reference from the story supported what I was trying to say.…

Last Day Diagnostic Today is my last day with English 101 and I’m pretty happy with how I have done over the course of these 15 weeks. English is certainly not my strongest class that I have taken and I often criticize my work, which makes it very difficult to write anything at all. I always have a lot to say but to get it down on a piece of paper is usually very hard for me. However, for this semester in English 101, I felt that I did a pretty good job at getting all my ideas down and have been pretty happy with my grades for each essay. I definitely have come a long way in this class and in English all together, which is very reassuring to be able to overcome one of my tougher classes without any issues at all.…

After reading my first writing project I noticed two things, first I could improve some sentences and go more into detail with some topics. I could fix some sentences to have the essay flow better for anyone reading it. I felt as if I jump from one sentence to another and left out some details that would be helpful to the reader. At the points where I highlighted some confusion, I will go back and fix them. I didn't hear any serious errors that needed to be fixed, but found spots where the paper could be improved.…

“A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.” ― Thomas Mann. Writing is a subject that is different for everyone. In my opinion if I could write about a topic I choose and I am passionate about I know my papers would be interesting to read. On the other hand, I when I am given a topic to write about I think it is harder to make the paper interesting and enjoyable to read.…

Mistakes cannot always be seen as a negative, as you can move on and correct them to better your knowledge. From my first essay this semester to my last I have seen a vigorous amount of improvement. Not only seen in my grades, but in the way my writing has transitioned between paragraphs and topics. This has helped my work flow more and added a keen sense of intelligence. I have seen much improvement in my essays but have seen the most significant change from my first entrance essay “My season”, to my major events essay “Wayward Feelings”, to my final argumentative essay “A Helpful Hand”.…
