The Importance of Planned Parenthood and Funding Sometime in your life, you have probably heard of Planned Parenthood, but how much do you really know about it? The public needs to be more aware of what kind of services Planned Parenthood offers. Planned Parenthood is a, “private, non-profit provider of medical services related to family planning, men and women’s sexual health, and abortions” (Ramelb 510). Its services focus on preventative health care. It can save lives from early detection of deadly cancerous diseases. “In 2013, half a million women went to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings and 400,000 women received a cervical exam from their medical staff” (Ernest 11). Breast cancer screenings detect cancer early on and it can affect anyone regardless of their age. Early detection can lead to treatments for the disease and therefore an increase in one’s life span. The quality of mammogram equipment and treatment for breast cancer has improved over the years, resulting in a more accurate diagnosis. Planned Parenthood does not provide mammograms in their facilities, they can only refer patients, what they do provide is breast cancer screenings and breast exams. Planned Parenthood services are not just for women, men can also benefit from the organization. Sexually transmitted diseases are very common, and they provide treatments and testing for them. Practicing safer sex can reduce your risk of catching an STD. They offer counseling and information about what kinds of STD’s there are and how to treat them. Before abortions were legal, women were forced to turn to illegal and unsafe abortions. They were often ineffective and very dangerous. The tools used were not clean and the women were not given proper medication or treatment. They would go as far as committing suicide to get rid of an unwanted pregnancy. Women across our nation fought for the right to our own bodies, “overturning Roe will not end abortions. Instead, permitting states to criminalize abortion or impose onerous restrictions will tragically and undeniably return thousands of women to back-alley or self-induced abortions” (Friedman 38).
